3 Bishops jailed – here’s the reason

Three Bishops of Holy Apostolic Reformed Church (HARC) have been sentenced to five days imprisonment for further contempt of court.

Apostle Samuel Anang Sowah, Bishop Abraham Adjetey Adjei and Bishop Daniel Buernor Tokoli, were initially found guilty of contempt of court by a High Court in Accra but were cautioned and discharged.

They were, however, found guilty of additional contempt of court after entering the church’s premises while being fully aware that they were the subject of an ongoing legal matter and that an application for an interlocutory injunction against them was still pending.

The applicants, the church’s Registered Trustees, claimed that despite their prior conviction and the pending status of the motion for an injunction, the defendants proceeded to do the exact actions that the motion for contempt was intended to stop.

That is, the three bishops visited the HARC chapels in Tema and Nungua on October 29, 2023.

The court presided over by Justice Boampong, said the three had not denied the allegations levelled against them and failed to respect the earlier caution by defiling the restraining order.

By that, the court sentenced them to five days in prison and awarded a cost of GHS1,000 against each of them.
