The Ghana Football Association (GFA) convened a crucial meeting with coach Chris Hughton following the Black Stars’ lackluster performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast as reported by 3news.com
The team’s 2-1 defeat against Cape Verde stirred criticism of Hughton’s controversial lineup and questionable tactics.

Amidst the aftermath, a fan reportedly engaged in a heated exchange with Hughton, an incident downplayed by the GFA, citing internal resolution without arrests. Nonetheless, the association expressed support for the under-fire coach in a meeting, as conveyed by Henry Asante-Twum, the GFA’s spokesperson.
“We have assured the coach 100% of our support,” stated Asante-Twum to BBC Sport. “We believe the team can secure victories in the two remaining matches to progress to the next round.”
With Egypt as the upcoming opponent, Hughton is under immense pressure to secure a victory and dispel doubts. His track record thus far has been uninspiring, with the Black Stars struggling against less fancied opposition, raising questions about his ability to lead the team to success.
Before the AFCON, Hughton’s record in five games included a lone victory over Madagascar and defeats to Comoros, Mexico, and the United States. A 0-0 draw against Namibia just before the tournament did little to allay concerns about the team’s preparedness.
Against this backdrop, Hughton must now rally his team and devise a strategy to overcome Egypt, a squad also facing scrutiny after an unexpected draw against Mozambique. The impending encounter promises tension, with both sides eager for a win to rejuvenate their faltering campaigns.
