Grace Minta, a 40-year-old Ghanaian athlete, has made history as the first African woman to win gold at the World Armwrestling Championship. Competing in the women’s 80kg category, she defeated opponents from Sweden, Ukraine, Germany, and Turkey, marking Ghana’s first-ever gold in the event.
Minta, who also serves as a police officer, has dominated African armwrestling since 2019, winning multiple African Championships and recently earning double gold at the 2023 African Games. Despite a previous setback at the 2023 World Combat Games, where she didn’t medal, Minta’s resilience led her to this historic victory in Moldova.
“This is a dream come true,” Minta said, dedicating her win to Ghana and the African armwrestling community. Her emotional moment on the podium, as Ghana’s anthem played, symbolized a new chapter for the sport in Africa.
The World Armwrestling Championship in Moldova, featuring over 1,500 competitors from more than 60 countries, continues to unfold, with live broadcasts available on TV and online platforms.
