The captain of the Ghana National Female Hockey team, Elizabeth Opoku, has been named Ghana’s Outstanding Woman in Sports for the second time.
Opoku championed the Black Sticks Ladies to win gold at this year’s African Games held in Accra.

She also led her club, GRA ladies to the 2024 Greater Accra Hockey League title and the 2024 Fetu Afahye Hockey Competition in Cape Coast.
For having an incredible year, she was honoured at the Ghana Outstanding Woman Awards organised by ASKOF Production at Wesley Towers in Accra, as the Outstanding Woman in Sports this year.
She expressed gratitude to her family, God and her teammates for all the support they’ve shown her throughout the years.
She also thanked the organisers for recognising her hard work for the second time – she first won the same award in 2019.
Opoku has won numerous accolades over the years and is one of the most awarded female athletes in Ghana and Africa.
In 2013 alone, Accra-based radio station Happy FM awarded her best player in the Fans Choice Awards and she was the top scorer and best player in the Africa Hockey Cup of Nations hosted in Kenya.
Opoku also won the best junior player in the Hockey World League R1 by the International Hockey Federation (FIH), in 2014.
She was the best player in the Schools and Colleges Sports Federation in 2009 and won the Chairman’s Invitational Cup promising star the following year.
