Why 7 Labone SHS students were stopped from writing WASSCE on Monday

Some seven students at the Labone Senior High School (SHS) in Accra were stopped from writing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) yesterday.

This according to reports was due to the seven students arriving over an hour late after the start of the paper.

School authorities said this is the second time that the seven students arrived late for a paper.

The students were therefore not allowed to write some Visual Arts papers on Monday, August 26, 2024.

The Deputy Minister of Education, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, disclosed this information during a tour of the school in an attempt to monitor the exam’s progress and give the applicants his best wishes.

Speaking to Accra-based Citi News, the Headmistress of Labone SHS, Rejoice Akua Acorlor, voiced her concerns while pointing out that the pupils had received a comprehensive briefing on the exam’s guidelines.

“Today we wrote social studies as one of the courses. We started on time and before today’s paper, we had given the students a briefing.

We have explained to them what WAEC expects from us as a school, they should be here on time, they should be here clearly 30 minutes before the start of the paper, they should be seated.”

“So we expected them one hour before the time and we were able to put them to their various seats, and they started the paper.

After 1 hour 20 minutes, some students came in and as per the briefing or the information from WAEC, we are not expected to let them, they’ve stayed too long.”

She added that school authorities would have considered if the students were at least 20 or 30 minutes late with tangible reasons, but they were 1 hour 20 minutes late “and as per the briefing or the information from WAEC, we are not expected to let them, they’ve stayed too long.”
