2024 elections: electoral commission proposes 3pm as new poll closing time

The Ghanaian Electoral Commission (EC) is contemplating a major change for the 2024 general elections. The proposal is to close the polls at 3 pm instead of the traditional 5 pm. The aim of this shift is to enhance the efficiency and transparency of the electoral process.

EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, referenced the 2020 election data, noting that by 1 pm, approximately 70% of polling stations had a reduced number of voters or none at all. This was attributed to the increased number of polling places, which expedited the voting process. The strategy to continue increasing polling places, each accommodating up to 500 individuals, is aimed at reducing the voting duration.

Mensa expressed confidence that an earlier poll closing time would facilitate vote counting and collation during daylight hours, promoting transparency and orderliness. “We trust that our Parliament will support this drive to ensure greater transparency and orderliness in our electoral process,” she stated.
