Aisha Huang, often referred to as the ‘Galamsey Queen,’ has been convicted on all counts by the state. The Accra High Court sentenced her to a four-year prison term on Monday, December 4, as reported by asaaseradio.com. Huang was on trial for various charges, including conducting illegal mining operations without a license, facilitating unlawful participation in mining, and re-entering Ghana after being deported. Despite the charges, Huang consistently denied any wrongdoing and remained in prison custody throughout the trial.
During the sentencing, Huang’s legal team made a case for a fine and deportation, taking into account her year-long incarceration during the trial. However, the state’s case, presented by security and intelligence officers, painted a different picture. They accused Huang of gaining “notoriety” for her involvement in illegal small-scale mining activities, known as ‘galamsey,’ across the country.

The prosecution further claimed that Huang had previously managed to avoid arrest in 2017 by leaving the country, only to allegedly resume her illegal mining activities upon her unauthorized return. Huang faced a total of four charges, including undertaking mining operations without a license, facilitating unlawful participation in mining, employing foreign nationals illegally, and re-entry into Ghana despite being prohibited.
