A computer engineer named Charles Bilson was recently sentenced by an Accra Circuit Court to a hefty fine of GH¢840,000 for fraudulent land transactions at Tse Addo in Accra. Despite pleading not guilty to the charges of fraudulent transaction and defrauding by false pretense, Mr. Bilson was found guilty after a full trial. The court, presided over by Mr Kwabena Obiri- Yeboah, stated that failure to pay the fine would result in a seven-year imprisonment sentence with hard labor.
The case began when the complainant, Mr George Dadzie Amonoo, was approached by Mr. Bilson in June 2017 with an offer to sell a plot of land. Mr. Amonoo, intrigued by the offer, paid GH¢50,000 for the land and an additional GH¢3,500 for the construction of a fence. However, upon visiting the land, he discovered that it was being developed by another party, Sherifatu Abubakar.
Investigations revealed that Mr. Bilson had sold the same piece of land to Sherifatu Abubakar for GH¢120,000 in October 2021. Ms. Abubakar had already begun construction on the land, including the fence that Mr. Amonoo had paid for. The court found that Mr. Bilson had indeed committed fraud by selling the same plot of land to two different parties and collecting money for services he did not render.
