Supporters of the ‘New Force movement’ rallied outside the Kaneshie District Court in a show of solidarity for the group’s spokesperson, Shalimar Abbusi. Abbusi, a Belgian national, is facing charges for allegedly obtaining a student permit in Ghana through false declarations. The supporters, dressed in black and red, displayed placards and chanted slogans in support of her and the New Force’s objectives. Messages like “Free Shalimar” and “Justice for Shalimar” were seen on signs. The protesters voiced their disappointment over Abbusi’s arrest, viewing it as an attempt to silence their movement.
Abbusi’s arrest came about during an investigation into her immigration status. The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) became aware of Abbusi’s activities on social media, particularly her role as the spokesperson for “The New Force”. She was invited by the Head of the National Enforcement Section at the Immigration Headquarters to address concerns related to her immigration status.

Investigations revealed Abbusi first arrived in Ghana on September 4, 2017, and had been a frequent visitor until 2018 when she claimed residency as a student at the Ghana Christian University College. However, the college confirmed that Abbusi had never been a student there, and the documents she used to support her application for a residence permit were forged. Now, Abbusi faces charges related to immigration offences and has been arraigned before the court for remand into Immigration custody.
