Ursula Owusu, the Minister for Communication and Digitalization, responded to inquiries from Rockson Nelson Defeamekpor, the Member of Parliament for the South Dayi constituency, regarding the government’s ownership stake in Vodafone Ghana. Owusu made it clear that there are no plans to divest the government’s 30% share in the Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited (GTCL).

In addressing concerns about potential share sales, Ursula Owusu reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to maintaining its minority shareholding in GTCL. She disclosed that Vodafone Ghana had already completed the transfer of its 70% ownership in GTCL to the Telecel Group in February 2023, signifying a significant shift within the telecommunications sector.

Providing additional context, it is pertinent to note that Vodafone Group Plc had successfully concluded the sale of its 70% ownership in Vodafone Ghana to the Telecel Group earlier in the same year. Margherita Della Valle, Vodafone’s Chief Executive, underscored the strategic significance of this move as part of the company’s broader initiative to streamline its African portfolio. Della Valle highlighted Vodafone’s instrumental role in developing Ghana’s network infrastructure since its entry into the market in 2008. The transaction secured regulatory approval and the endorsement of the Government of Ghana, ensuring the retention of its 30% minority share in GTCL.
