Coach Chris Hughton has issued an apology to Ghanaians following the Black Stars’ disheartening 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 opener.
This marks the team’s third consecutive failure to secure a win in their initial match, putting them in a challenging position that demands a victory against Egypt to keep their tournament aspirations alive.

Expressing his frustration in a post-match conference, Hughton lamented, “We are incredibly hugely disappointed with the result. We came into the game with a game plan to start on the front foot.”
The Black Stars found themselves trailing for most of the match, conceding a goal within the first 17 minutes as Jamiro Monteiro capitalized on a rebound. Despite Majeed Ashimeru’s disallowed long shot, Alexander Djiku’s header from a corner kick brought the team an equalizer. Nevertheless, Cape Verde secured a late victory through Garry Rodrigues, exposing vulnerabilities in the Black Stars’ defense.
With the upcoming clash against Egypt, the team faces the looming threat of early elimination, mirroring their previous AFCON performance.
