Youth for Human Rights Africa (YoHRA), a key player in human rights advocacy, has openly criticized the Ghanaian government’s recent application of the death penalty to six individuals charged with conspiracy to overthrow the state. YoHRA’s press statement highlights their stance that the death penalty inherently violates the right to life, a core tenet of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The group is calling for a prompt reevaluation of Ghana’s stance on capital punishment, advocating for alternative, more humane sentencing options.
Highlighting the global trend towards abolishing the death penalty, YoHRA points out that Ghana’s continued use of capital punishment is increasingly misaligned with international human rights norms. The organization stresses that such extreme punitive actions compromise human dignity and the foundation of human rights. YoHRA is pushing for a collective international effort to challenge and ultimately eradicate the death penalty from Ghana’s legal system.
