Social media has gone berserk calling for the cancellation of the electronic levy fee (E-Levy) if government plan on reinstating the collection of road tolls in the country.
With some calling it unfair and a ‘scam’ if both is to be collected.
Speaking to the media after the mid-year budget review in parliament today, the Minister for Works and Housing, Honorable Kojo Oppong said the minister for roads has received cabinet approval to start re-introducing road tolls.
When asked if that is an actual possibility, he responded that: “Yes, that is a matter already being considered.”
He, however, added that the reintroduction of the road tolls might not be soon.
“I don’t think that it means immediately the tolls are going to be reintroduced,” the minister said.
This, so far, has not been received well by the public, especially on social media.
Many are simply calling for the cancellation of E-Levy since that was supposed to be a substitute for the road tolls.
In 2021, government announced the cancellation of road tolls and introduced E-levy as its substitute.
The government implemented the e-levy, a highly unpopular tax on mobile money transactions, in May 2022. The fee was first imposed as a 1.5% daily charge on all electronic and mobile money transactions over GHS100.
But later reduced the tax from 1.5% to 1% in January 2023.
Myaccraonline will follow up on this story and provide updates as to whether for sure the E-levy will be cancelled for the re-introduction of road tolls.
