German club Fortuna Düsseldorf is mourning the tragic death of Ghanaian teenager Newton Opoku-Mensah. The U17 player drowned in a lake in Duisburg on Tuesday evening and later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, despite the best efforts of medical staff.

The club expressed deep sorrow over the loss, with all youth team activities from U9 to U19 suspended until further notice. Klaus Allofs, Director of Sport & Communication, expressed the club’s grief, saying, “We are deeply shocked. Newton was a young man living his dream, and his passing is a tremendous loss. Our condolences go out to his family, teammates, and the entire youth performance center staff.”
