Tema West gets new school block soon

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Tema West, Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah, has cut the sod for the construction of a three-unit classroom block for the Tema West Municipal Assembly (TWMA) Sraha Basic School.

The contractor estimates that the project will be finished in three months and include a water system, six student restrooms, and an office for the head teacher.

During the ceremony on Tuesday, Mr. Ahenkorah stated that in December 2022, the Adjei Kojo community in the Tema West Municipality, which had only one public basic school up until then, received a six-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities from Cargill Ghana, a cocoa processing and licensed buying company, and CARE International Ghana.

He said he discovered that students who had just finished basic six at the school were receiving their Junior High School instruction in the staff common room designated for primary department facilitators due to a lack of accommodations.

This was discovered after some parents declined to transfer their children to other community schools for their JHS education.

After visiting the school and hearing an appeal from the school’s headmistress, Irene Adorku, parents, and some students, he said he lobbied the Ministry of Education to assist in constructing an extra JHS block through the Ghana Accountability and Learning Outcome Project (GALOP) so that basic six graduates from the Sraha community could complete their JHS education at the same institution.

The MP claimed that the project’s design allowed for future expansion to accommodate the community’s and the Adjei Kojo Electoral Area’s expanding population.

The largest community in Tema West, the Sraha community in the Adjei Kojo Electoral Area, has approximately 7,000 children.

Mr. Ahenkorah expressed optimism that the intervention will ensure that these children receive high-quality basic education, which will have a substantial positive impact on the national and local development.
