The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Accra East Region is requesting the public’s help in locating and apprehending suspected thieves who have been damaging established electrical transformers that serve the villages in the region, particularly in the Dodowa districts.
Three 200 KVA and one 50 KVA pole-mounted transformers in many settlements in the Dodowa district have been vandalised in the last two months, according to reports from the area.

Speaking to journalists in the capital on Tuesday, the Accra East Regional General Manager of ECG, Ing. Bismark Otoo, said these incidents occurred separately in Agomeda, Kodiabe, Nyanya and Ayikuma communities of the Dodowa District, between July and August 2024.
He clarified that certain unidentified individuals frequently push down electrical transformers installed on poles and take important parts out of them.
According to Mr. Otoo, this typically leads to extended blackouts in the impacted areas since the company needs to locate a substitute to bring back the towns’ power supply.
“The company is spending huge sums of money to replace those transformers for the communities to ensure continuous supply of electricity. One 200VA transformer cost about GH¢120,000.00 and so, if we have to keep on replacing vandalised or stolen transformers; imagine the amount of money the company would be losing,” he added.
Mr. Otoo stated that ECG is working to provide a steady and dependable supply of energy to its clients and, as a result, he made a plea to the public and clients to help protect all ECG installations from being stolen or vandalised.
“All electrical equipment we have installed in communities are for the benefit of the community, and so we all have to show greater care so that a few miscreants do not deny us of the benefits of these investments,” he said.
Customers and the general public, Mr. Otoo encouraged, should report any strange individuals they see near ECG installations to the closest ECG office or Police Station.
