Few pedestrians use the footbridges that were built alongside the Madina-Adenta highway in Accra to improve road safety.
The footbridges built in 2019 are barely serving the purposes for which they were constructed because most pedestrians still prefer to cross the busy highway directly.
Many cross the road through the cut-out portions of the fencing installed to prevent them from doing so.

Drug addicts have also made the bridges into their safe havens, and other pedestrians have converted the bridges into convenience stores and trash dumps.
The bridges were completed after a speeding taxi killed a 22-year-old high school student trying to cross the road about five years ago.
Some agitated residents urged the government to build the footbridges after the incident in an effort to lower the number of people who die while crossing the highway.
However, many are still not using the footbridges and some residents have shared various reasons for not using the footbridges.
Many said crossing the highway directly was a shorter route, as several others have previously raised concerns about the length of the footbridges when it was first built.
Others also stated fear of being robbed or attacked by people around the footbridges especially at night.
Some pedestrians, however, still use the footbridge.
Drivers along the route have raised concerns about the risk especially at night due to lack of street lights.
