Attacks on EC May Disrupt 2024 Elections

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Vice Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has raised concerns about the ongoing criticism of the Electoral Commission (EC) by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking to chiefs and religious leaders in New Edubiase, Ashanti Region, Dr. Prempeh, known as ‘Napo’, warned that such actions could heighten tensions ahead of the 2024 elections.

He acknowledged the right of political parties to protest against the EC but emphasized that these protests should be done respectfully to prevent undermining public confidence in the electoral process. He stressed that maintaining peace is crucial for Ghana’s development during this election period.

Dr. Prempeh expressed particular concern over the NDC’s portrayal of the EC as biased, warning that this narrative could foster distrust and unrest. He called on all political parties to put the nation’s peace above their desire to win, urging that any concerns about the electoral process be addressed in a constructive way that serves the country’s interests.

“We must know that we have only one Ghana to develop,” he remarked, emphasizing the responsibility of all citizens to maintain peace before, during, and after the elections. He concluded by cautioning that disturbances could hinder the country’s progress, saying, “Disturbances will draw the country’s development back.” He said.
