Oliver Barker Vormawor and 12 other Democracy Hub protestors arrested for demonstrating against illegal mining, also known as galamsey, have been remanded for two weeks in police custody after appearing before an Accra Circuit Court today.
Vormawor had been admitted to the police hospital in Cantonments, Accra, due to ill-health for treatment after his lawyers requested that their client receive medical attention following his arrest and detention on Monday, September 23, 2024.
He, therefore, couldn’t make it to the first court hearing on Wednesday, September 26, 2024, when 39 of the protestors were arraigned before court and denied bail to reappear in two weeks.
Some of the protestors who appeared before the court today were also being tried for the first time since their arrests during the three-day protest at 37 roundabout in Accra.
Vormawor, who is a lead convener of Democracy Hub, together with other protestors pleaded not guilty to charges such as conspiracy to commit unlawful assembly, assault on a public officer, defacement of public property, offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace, theft and unlawful damage.
The court denied all the protestors bail to reappear on October 8, 2024.
Meanwhile, some Ghanaians are calling for the unlawful arrest of the protestors to be freed under #FreeTheCitizens.
