GFA on the Verge of Parting Ways with Black Stars Coach Chris Hughton Amidst World Cup Qualification Concerns

0

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has reportedly decided to part ways with Black Stars coach Chris Hughton, pending government approval due to compensation considerations.

Hughton’s fate is expected to be officially communicated on Thursday after Friday’s Exco meeting. Despite having a contract until Feb 2024, doubts about his ability to secure crucial World Cup qualifying victories against Madagascar and Comoros have led to the decision.

The GFA acknowledges that, for the 2026 qualification, these wins are pivotal. Notably, sources close to Hughton reveal his awareness of the impending decision.

Assistant coach George Boateng is poised to take temporary charge if the decision is finalized. While dissenting voices exist within the Exco, the major obstacle lies in the financial implications, given the government’s existing debts to former coaches CK Akonnor and Milovan Rajevac. The GFA’s move is a strategic consideration of both sporting and economic factors.
