A young glass fabricator in Accra, 21-year-old Charles Obeng, has been handed a decade-long sentence with hard labor for narcotics possession by an Accra Circuit Court. The presiding judge, Mrs. Susanna Eduful, also imposed a hefty fine of GHC120,000.00, equivalent to 10,000 penalty units. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional year of imprisonment for Obeng.
Despite his plea of innocence, the court found Obeng guilty after the trial. The prosecution’s case, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Evans Kesse, detailed how police officers stationed at Kaneshie acted on a tip-off about a suspect with narcotics. On September 20, 2022, Obeng was apprehended at the Takoradi lorry station with two bags containing substances believed to be illegal drugs.

The substances, which were later confirmed to be narcotics by the Police Forensic Laboratory, were to be delivered to an individual in Takoradi, according to Obeng. However, he did not provide assistance to the police in identifying the source of the narcotics. The court’s decision sends a clear message about the severe consequences of drug-related offenses in the country.
