Ghana captain Andre Ayew, gearing up for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) starting on January 13, 2024, considers AFCON a tougher challenge than the World Cup. Ayew, who played in three World Cups and seven AFCON tournaments, eyes leading the Black Stars to their first AFCON title since 1982.
As Ghana’s all-time leading scorer in AFCON with 10 goals, Ayew aims to set records in the upcoming tournament. Needing three appearances to hold the record for most AFCON appearances, the 34-year-old midfielder is poised to feature in his eighth AFCON. He also aspires to become the first player to score in seven different AFCON editions.

Despite bitter experiences, losing in the finals in 2010 and 2015, Ayew remains optimistic about Ghana’s chances, emphasizing team unity.
Speaking at the Black Stars’ farewell dinner, he highlighted the tournament’s difficulty, stating, “This tournament is even harder than the World Cup… the only way we can do this is by being together and being united.”
Ghana, not having won AFCON since 1982, faces Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique in Group B, commencing their campaign against the Blue Sharks on January 14.
