Dr. Titus Beyuo, a medical practitioner, has voiced concerns about the reopening of the Renal Unit at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. He fears it could lead to more problems down the line. The unit was closed to out-patients in May due to a GHȼ4 million debt.
The hospital attributed the financial strain to the removal of tax and excise duty exemption on medical consumables, which doubled the prices of essential goods. To cover costs, the hospital considered increasing dialysis treatment fees from GH¢380 to GH¢765. They warned that without the fee increase, the centre wouldn’t last a week.

Despite these challenges, pressure from state authorities and hospital management led to the reopening of the unit. However, Dr. Beyuo believes without government intervention and a sustainable financial plan, the unit could close again soon.
On Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Dr. Beyuo explained that without proper financial planning, the hospital’s debt would continue to grow, risking a blacklist from service providers. He warned that the current situation could lead to a shortage of consumables, forcing the unit to close once more.
