In a recent trial at the Gender Based Violence Court, a 23-year-old carpenter named Christopher Kavi received a 10-year prison sentence for the defilement of a 13-year-old girl in Ashalaja, located in the Greater Accra Region. Kavi, who faced charges for his actions, entered a guilty plea. Subsequently, the court, operating out of the Ghana Police Service headquarters, convicted Kavi based on his admission of guilt and delivered the sentence.
The case was presented by Detective Chief Inspector Opoku Aniagyei, who detailed that both the accused and the victim lived in close proximity, sharing the same neighborhood with the victim’s mother, a trader and the complainant in the case. The victim, intending to attend a church service on December 19, 2023, told her mother of her plans, who then asked her to take her younger brother with her. However, Kavi, feigning illness, contacted the victim and requested she visit him post-service.

After church, the victim left for Kavi’s residence around 8:30 pm, where events took a turn. Kavi, after taking a bath, engaged the victim in conversation and subsequently initiated sexual contact with her. Following the incident, Kavi accompanied the victim back home, only to be met by her family members who were out searching for her. This led to Kavi’s immediate apprehension.
