Ghana coach Chris Hughton has outlined his role, emphasizing his commitment to delivering the best results and performances for the team.

Hughton, appointed in February, has faced criticism following two defeats in October— losing 2-0 to Mexico and then being battered 4-0 by USA.

Hughton admitted the challenges but expressed his dedication to learning from both positive and negative experiences. In an interview with BBC, “What my role as coach of the Black Stars to get the best results and the best performances from the team. You can’t always get that, but what you can always do, you can always learn from your previous experiences, whether it’s good or bad.”

Looking ahead to the 2023 AFCON where Ghana are drawn against Egypt, Mozambique, and Cape Verde in the group stage, Hughton recognised the importance of the tournament but remained focused on the immediate task at hand—the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against Madagascar and Comoros.

“It’s wonderful and great to want to talk about  AFCON, the tournament itself, but sometimes for coaches, it’s difficult, because we have two very important World Cup qualification games before then. If your concentrations are too far past that, then you can take your eye off what is, at this moment, the most important thing. Most important thing for us at this moment are our two World Cup qualification games,” he said.

He added, “Morocco, Egypt, Senegal, Cameroon, Tunisia… I think that the level of teams in Africa, I think it’s as strong as it’s ever been, I really do. I think there are so many now, so many more players playing at big clubs in Europe and on the world stage.”

Ghana will play Madagascar in Kumasi on November 17 and then travel to Moroni for their second match against Comoros.
