Some alleged thugs and landlords yesterday demolished some properties of University of Ghana staff and residents around the Achimota Police Station.
The alleged thugs and landguards reportedly acted in the presence of police and on the commands of an unknown private contractor.
They demolished many houses and makeshift structures on the land.
Since then, the land’s occupants have promised to resist any efforts by the unidentified private contractor to evict them.
The tenants want the eviction procedure to stop right away and that their rights be respected.

In addition, they are asking the authorities to reveal the private contractor’s name and the validity of the demolition project.
Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV, the Chairman of the University of Ghana Branch of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), Benjamin Nkumsah, called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to intervene.
“What’s happening is that someone is putting up a building here, I don’t know who the building belongs to, but all of a sudden, they came around 12am to come and do a demolition exercise here.
And I’m told that the people that came, police were there, pistols were mounted, even they were shooting around the places, so we are seeing this as an incident the State is aware which we are calling on IGP.”
“You cannot come to somebody’s residence around 12 to destroy the place, even people were in with family, at least respect the people,” Mr Nkumsah said.
