In a recent turn of events, an Accra Circuit Court has handed down an eight-year sentence with hard labour to a driver for his involvement in a foiled kidnapping plot targeting a businessman and his daughter. Despite Godfred Ayittey’s plea of innocence regarding the conspiracy with Wang Liang to abduct the pair for ransom, the court found evidence sufficient to convict him after a thorough trial.
The case unfolded when Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Emmanuel Nyamekye shared with the court that on August 3, 2022, Richard Asomaning, a key witness, alerted the Tema Police. He reported that Ayittey had approached him with a proposition to recruit a competent driver for a kidnapping operation intended to extort ransom. Asomaning feigned agreement, supplying Ayittey with his and Peter Ofoe Agbovie’s identification details, the latter being a recent recruit.

The plot thickened as the prosecution revealed Ayittey had identified their intended targets: Mr. Joseph K. Horgle, owner of J. K. Horgle Transport and Company Limited, and his daughter Elinam, the Deputy Managing Director. Ayittey managed all communications via phone, never meeting the witnesses face-to-face. The Tema Police, in collaboration with the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), delved deeper into the investigation, discovering the creation of a WhatsApp group by Ayittey for coordinating the kidnapping, as the court learned during the proceedings.
