Drivers In Accra Risk Arrest If…

Drivers in Ghana’s capital risk arrest if they are to implement the proposed 15 percent increment in transport fares starting Monday, July 22.

At least, that is if the Ghana Police Service heeds to the call by the group calling itself, the Alliance of Drivers Ghana to arrest any driver in Accra who increases their transport fares.

Alliance of Drivers Ghana threaten to protest if the increment becomes effective come Monday.

The group on Wednesday tagged the proposed increment as “illegal” because the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has not issued such directive.

Early the same day, the Public Relations Officer of the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, David Agboado lamented about the impact of the rising costs of fuel and essential items such as spare parts are having on the transport sector which according to him justifies the increase in transport fares.

“We will be increasing transport fares on Monday by 15 percent. The reason is that fuel prices have gone high. All that we use in servicing our vehicles has gone high. That necessitated the 15 percent increment,” he said.

He, however, added that the Transport Ministry is not aware and that they “don’t need to sit with Transport Ministry before we increase our transport fares.”

This has evoked strong opposition by the general public, prompting the Alliance of Drivers Ghana to call for the arrest of any driver who carries out the direction.
