Grieving mother sues hospital over baby’s loss

Mavis Aklamanu, a woman whose joy of becoming a mother was abruptly ended during childbirth due to what she describes as ‘medical negligence’, is now on a quest for justice for her lost child. She has taken legal action against the Airport Women’s Hospital, demanding compensation amounting to GH¢5,000,000 among other things. This came after Mavis, who was expecting her baby, lost her child under mysterious circumstances following an extended labour and a delayed planned caesarean section, transforming what was supposed to be a moment of joy into a time of sorrow and pain.

Mavis recounts her tragic experience, saying that she initially chose a natural birth procedure but was later prepared for a Caesarian section. Adding to her distress, Mavis was left unattended after agreeing to the CS, until 5am the following day, which led to severe contractions and complications. Despite her efforts to alert the nurses and doctors throughout the night when she noticed a discharge of fluids, it was only discovered in the morning that Mavis had lost her baby.

Mavis recalls her first day at the hospital, “The first day I went there and met with the receptionist, the first question she asked me was if I wanted normal delivery or CS. I said normal delivery because obviously it was my first child so why will I go for CS when there is nothing wrong with me. They came to shave the area where they will be cutting and left. I waited for like two hours and nobody came to say anything. A doctor came and I asked him what’s happening? I told him I have been shaved so what is happening? He asked me if I wanted the CS today. I told him they said my situation is an emergency so why don’t they carry out the procedure today. Was I supposed to wait?” The Caesarian section was eventually performed after a long wait, but tragically, the baby did not survive.
