Passengers at the Kotoka International Airport were quickly evacuated from the Terminal Three Departure Hall on Sunday afternoon due to an emergency situation.
According to the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL), the emergency evacuation was forced by detected smoke at the baggage wrap area.

GACL said the smoke was emanating from a passenger’s luggage around 3:27 pm, and airport security was quickly alerted to handle the emergency.
“The Operations Room of Aviation Security Department was immediately alerted and the luggage in question was swiftly isolated. Passengers in the terminal at the time were quickly evacuated in line with GACL’s Emergency Operations procedures,” a statement released by GACL on the same day noted.
The passenger whose baggage the smoke was emanating from has since been handed to the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) for interrogation.
GACL also advised passengers to desist from travelling with prohibited items are in their luggage.
“Passengers are advised not to travel with batteries, as this is against International Civil Aviation Regulations. Any detection of batteries or any other prohibited items or substances in luggage, will be confiscated and the passenger handed over to the authorities for processing,” the statement added.
GACL expressed gratitude to passengers who were in the Terminal Three Departure Hall for their cooperation during the emergency evacuation exercise.

Operations at the airport have been fully resumed smoothly since the incident.
