As part of his presidential campaign for the upcoming December 2024 election, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has outlined an ambitious plan to elevate sports, creative arts, and tourism across Ghana. His manifesto promises a comprehensive approach to revitalizing these sectors, ensuring they contribute significantly to the nation’s development. Key highlights of his plan include:
1. Upgrading Football Pitches
Dr. Bawumia plans to upgrade football pitches in key locations such as Kumasi, Accra, Cape Coast, Legon, Tamale, and Essipong to meet the highest international standards. This initiative aims to enhance the quality of the playing surfaces, making them suitable for hosting both local and international matches.
2. Expanding AstroTurf Construction
To nurture young talent and promote grassroots football, Dr. Bawumia commits to continuing the construction of AstroTurfs in every constituency. This initiative is designed to boost the development of football at the juvenile level, ensuring that young players have access to quality training facilities.
3. Reviving the Premier League
Recognizing the importance of a vibrant national football league, Dr. Bawumia pledges to support the revival of the Premier League and its clubs. His plan includes measures to improve the commercial viability of the league, creating related jobs, and making the league a more attractive product for both fans and investors.
4. Operation Olympics Glory
Dr. Bawumia introduces the “Operation Olympics Glory” program, a strategic initiative aimed at preparing Ghanaian athletes for success at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, USA, and future international competitions. This program will dedicate resources towards the training and readiness of athletes, aiming to secure Olympic glory for Ghana.
5. Building New Stadiums
As part of his infrastructure development agenda, Dr. Bawumia plans to construct six new stadiums, each with a 5,000-seater capacity, in the newly created regions. These stadiums will not only serve as venues for sporting events but will also contribute to the social and economic development of these regions.
6. Promoting School Sports
To foster a culture of sports from a young age, Dr. Bawumia proposes the establishment of a Ghana School Sports Secretariat. This body will be responsible for promoting school sports across the country, creating more opportunities for young people to engage in sports and potentially discover future stars.
Dr. Bawumia’s manifesto underscores his commitment to transforming sports, creative arts, and tourism in Ghana, ensuring that these sectors play a pivotal role in the nation’s progress.
