Originally built in the 1970s, the complex was envisioned as a multipurpose sports center to foster athletic talent and serve the community. However, it has not seen the necessary upkeep to fulfill this potential.
The Azumah Nelson Sports Complex was designed to accommodate about 10,000 spectators and feature an ICT center, boxing gyms, tennis and basketball courts, and a restaurant. The ambitious plan aimed to transform the complex into a comprehensive youth and sports resource center. This expansion project commenced in 2018, sparking hope among sports enthusiasts and the local community.
Despite these grand plans, the development has stalled significantly. Initially estimated at a value of $4 million, the renovation project has seen little progress over the years. The situation took a turn for the worse in October 2020 when the contractor abandoned the site due to the Sports Ministry’s failure to pay him, as per reports.
Today, the once-promising sports complex is overgrown with bush, a stark reminder of the missed opportunities and the gap between political promises and reality. The neglect of the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex underscores the need for accountability and sustained investment in public infrastructure to truly benefit the community and nurture local talent.
