I can’t sponsor a gambling league – McDan

Daniel Mackorley, CEO of McDan Group, has revealed that his company would have considered sponsoring the Ghana Premier League if not for the rampant gambling in the sport.

As the 2024/25 season approaches, the league faces a sponsorship gap following the end of Betpawa’s three-year deal. This challenge is heightened by concerns over gambling and match-fixing, which have tainted the league’s reputation.

In an interview with Asempa FM, Mackorley expressed his concerns about the integrity of the league: “I can’t sponsor the league because gambling is too prevalent. Match-fixing is ruining our game. You watch a match, and how a goalkeeper concedes is laughable—because someone has to bet and win,” he said.

Mackorley urged for reforms to clean up the sport and restore its credibility, which he sees as essential for attracting serious investors: “Football is a beautiful game, but under these conditions, our players can’t have long careers. We need to sanitize our football.”

As the new season nears, Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku has reassured fans that efforts are underway to secure a new sponsor.
