Meet the boxer on course to win Ghana’s first world title in half a decade

Ghanaians will be licking their lips in anticipation of the chance to end the over five-year drought for world titles when Kumasi-born Stanley “Ashanti Warrior” Nyantakyi challenges Argentine Sergio “El Canalla” Sosa, 30, with four losses in 17 professional bouts on December 7 in Wisconsin, USA, for the Universal Boxing Organisation (UBO) world featherweight title.

Nyantakyi, 23, who would be making his US debut and has only lost once in his record of 11 professional fights.

In an interview with the state-owned Daily Graphic, he said he would make the upcoming bout an unforgettable event for all Ghanaians.

“This is the chance, this is the opportunity, and this world title will be in Ghana by the Grace of God, I promise Ghanaians.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I have to grab it with both hands, I will win the world title for Ghana,” he stated.

The orthodox knockout expert, who just defeated fellow countryman Isaac Nettey to win the UBO Africa featherweight title at the SG Mall in Kumasi, is anticipated to bolster his technical staff and step up his training in Accra and Kumasi.

According to his manager and CEO of Osibor Boxing Promotions and Management, Gordon Frimpong, preparations are on to give Nyantakyi the finest preparation and assistance possible in advance of the fight,

“We are getting him a dietician, an extra trainer with his pad work and hitting of mitts and preparing to get some of his fans to the US to support him.”
