Ghana’s 21-year-old swimming sensation, Nubia Adjei, showcased her talent on the global stage during the 2024 World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) in Budapest, Hungary. Competing in Heat 2 of the women’s 50m backstroke, Adjei clocked an impressive time of 29.87 seconds, finishing fifth in her heat.

Despite her determined effort, Adjei faced fierce competition, placing 43rd overall out of 58 swimmers. The top-16 cut-off for the semi-finals proved elusive, with Czech swimmer Daryna Nabojcenko securing the final spot with a time of 26.86 seconds. The heat was led by Uruguay’s Abril Aunchayna (27.57 seconds), followed by Namibia’s Jessica Humphrey (28.52 seconds), Jamaica’s Leanna Wainwright (29.54 seconds), and Paraguay’s Lara Gimenez Yegros (29.60 seconds).
This was Adjei’s second appearance at the championships, following an earlier participation in the women’s 100m backstroke, where she finished eighth in her heat and 58th overall. Despite the challenges, her performances underscore Ghana’s growing presence in the global swimming arena.
Hosted at Budapest’s iconic Danube Arena, the 2024 World Aquatics Championships, which began on December 10 and runs until December 15, features elite swimmers from around the world competing in a 25m pool format.
Although Adjei did not achieve her desired results, her efforts symbolize the determination and promise of Ghanaian athletes on the world stage. With continued dedication and experience, she is poised to make even greater strides in her swimming career.
