The House is urging the Finance Ministry to address a GH140.7 million shortfall. This is to ensure the integrity of the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections. The resolution was moved by Mr. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Majority Leader and Chairman of Parliament’s Special Budget Committee. He stated that the Electoral Commission (EC) had budgeted for the additional request but the Finance Ministry could only allocate GH786.9 million.
The EC has plans to carry out different initiatives and acquire equipment for the successful execution of the 2024 elections. These activities include purchasing additional BVDs and BVRs, recruiting and training electoral officers, replacing exited staff, upgrading the data center, and purchasing ICT equipment. To meet these needs, the EC proposed a budget of GH932.03 million for 2024, but the Finance Ministry only allocated GH786.9 million, leaving a GH140.7 million budget gap.
