The Committee on Subsidiary Legislation is currently contemplating a proposal to enable the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to curb losses in passport booklet printing. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, brought this to light in Parliament, stating that it’s time for Ghanaians to pay realistic prices for passports starting next year. She cited the prevailing financial constraints in the economy, arguing that it’s no longer sustainable for the state to continue subsidizing passports.

The report by the Committee on Foreign Affairs on the 2024 budget estimates revealed that Ghana’s passport fees, at a rate of $7.7, are the lowest in the West African sub-region. In comparison, Cameroon charges $180, Guinea $57, Guinea-Bissau $65, Burkina Faso $80, and Nigeria $54.29. Ms. Ayorkor Botchwey further explained that the current passport fees in Ghana do not cover production costs. This discussion comes ahead of the approval of the GH¢1.127 million budget estimates for her ministry.
