Update on traffic conditions in Accra amid demonstrations and police roadblocks.

The traffic situation in the capital has worsened this afternoon due to the ongoing demonstrations and roadblocks installed by police on some routes in Accra.

The police announced last night that some roads will be blocked in the capital this holiday weekend for some special operations to be carried out by the service.

This has contributed to the heavy traffic conditions being experienced in Accra, especially on the affected routes, with the 37 road being the most affected.

Motorists using the 37 road were earlier advised by the police statement released last night to avoid using the stretch.

Police subsequently issued a statement during the ongoing demonstrations by Democracy Hub saying “the demonstrators have driven one of their vehicles to block the road at the 37 Roundabout, causing inconvenience to other road users.”

Police later condemned these actions adding that the service “has monitored attempts by the Democracy Hub demonstrators to frustrate and put impediments in the way of commuters and other road users.

“We are urging the demonstrators to desist from such uncivil, unpatriotic and un-Ghanaian acts depicted in the images and videos and allow the general public to go about their businesses without any hindrance.”
Meanwhile, the protest is still ongoing and the traffic situation seems to have improved.
Police have assured the public that “more Police officers have been deployed across the city to manage the traffic and ensure security, law and order.”
However, residents in the capitals are advised to consider the traffic situation before stepping out and if possible avoid using the route from the AU Roundabout to 37 Roundabout.

The demonstration dubbed #ReOccupyJulorbiHouse organised by Democracy Hub is a three-day protest to draw attention to national issues as illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, youth unemployment, poverty, corruption, state capture and injustice in Ghana.

The protest started today and is expected to end on Monday, September 23, 2024.
