The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has recently made a concerning announcement. The subject results of candidates from 235 schools who participated in the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) have been withheld. The reason behind this drastic measure is the alleged use of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) by students to generate answers for the examination.
This decision was made public through a press release issued on December 18. WAEC stated that it had observed instances where A.I. was employed by students to respond to examination questions. The results currently withheld are under investigation. The outcome of these inquiries will decide whether the results will be released or permanently canceled, underlining WAEC’s commitment to preserving the integrity of the examination process.

The press release also revealed further issues with the WASSCE. An additional 3,647 subject results are facing cancellation due to candidates bringing unauthorized materials into examination centers. Furthermore, the entire results of 839 candidates have been nullified for having mobile phones in the examination hall. In total, the results of 4,280 candidates’ subjects and the entire results of 1,005 individuals have been withheld for various suspected offences. This reflects the stringent measures WAEC has put in place to uphold the credibility of the WASSCE.
