The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has shut down ZxX Limited, a mattress manufacturing company in Afienya, near Tema, Greater Accra Region, for using substandard materials.
The company was found to be producing Moonda mattresses using polystyrene, a material typically used for packaging household appliances like refrigerators and microwaves, instead of the approved polyurethane. Polystyrene, though useful for protecting items during shipment, is not suitable for mattress production as it doesn’t meet industry standards for durability and comfort.
According to George Kojo Anti, the GSA’s Head of Special Projects, the operation was initiated after reports surfaced that the Chinese-owned company was using inferior materials for its products in the local market.

bIt was also revealed that ZxX Limited had not registered with the GSA and did not hold the required licence certification. The GSA plans to take appropriate punitive actions against the company.
During the inspection, the authority discovered not only substandard mattresses but also a variety of household appliances, such as television sets, being produced at the Afienya facility.
