Why Fishermen are crying over premix fuel at Tema

Some fishermen at the Tema Canoe Beach say they have not been supplied with the needed premix fuel to go out for fishing in over three weeks.

They say the unavailability of the premix fuel at the landing beach is greatly affecting their livelihood since their work as artisanal fishermen is seasonal and not being able to go for fishing at this active fishing period is worrying.

Speaking to the GNA, the National President of the Canoe and Fishing Gear Owners Association of Ghana (CaFGOAG), Nana Kweigyah, said the situation is a very challenging one for the artisanal fishermen.

He added that since the ban on fishing was lifted, the supply of premix fuel has been inadequate.

“I have heard of a few landing beaches that have received more than one and many beaches that have received just one or none since fishing resumed after the closure.

“Supply in all cases is erratic and woefully inadequate.”

He urged the government to intervene and increase the supply of premix fuel which was captured as 110,700,000 litres in the 2024 budget.
