In a bid to tackle flooding and promote cleanliness in Ghana, a private company called Drain Cleaners, authorized by the Accra Metropolitan Authority, has taken the initiative to clean and desilt gutters and drains in various areas, charging the property owners for the service.
According to the CEO, Edward Zanyoh, it is the responsibility of business and homeowners to maintain the gutters and drains in front of their properties, a fact many are unaware of due to a local government by-law.

Mr. Zanyoh explained that before his team undertakes any cleaning exercise, they communicate with the property owners. This process involves sending letters with a bill of the cleaning cost and an information package containing the by-law and a detailed explanation of the owner’s responsibilities.
If there is no response, warning letters are issued, and if the drain is still not cleaned, Drain Cleaners will do the job and bill the owner, with the possibility of legal action if the bill is not paid.
