Why Salt workers are protesting in Weija

Workers at the Panbros Salt Factory, situated near Weija Junction, are staging protests in opposition to what they perceive to be an attempt by certain traditional leaders to give Chinese commercial interests ownership of a piece of the salt mining area.

The workers, who were wearing red and black clothing, yelled slogans and showed their adamant opposition to the change, which they believe will result in a significant loss of jobs.

Over 1,000 workers would reportedly lose their jobs if they takeover is complete.

The aggrieved workers called for interventions to stop the takeover, as it will affect their livelihoods.

“We notice that the Chinese people started encroaching on our land. They are destroying our land. We won’t agree since we don’t have anywhere going. Pambros produces salt and same as Sege, so we are contributing our quota,” a protester said.

Citing the government’s substantial expenditure on salt, the workers are pleading with President Akufo-Addo to take action.

“We even learnt that the Jubilee House spends a lot on salt. So if our jobs are destroyed how can we support the country as local producers? President Akufo Addo must act on this. They have even employed the services of land guard and it is scary.”

They also raised concern, calling the situation “scary,” given the purported investors’ hiring of land guards.
