why the SDA church will not vote in this year’s elections

The Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church has responded to President Akufo-Addo’s recent appeal for its members to reconsider their stance on voting in the December 7 elections, which falls on a Saturday. The church maintains its long-standing conviction that voting on a Saturday, the Sabbath of the Lord, is not in alignment with its religious beliefs. The leadership of the SDA church, in a statement signed by the presidents of the Southern Ghana and Northern Ghana conferences, reiterated their position and provided guidance to their members.

The SDA church has advocated for changing the election date to accommodate its members’ religious observance. The church believes that moving Election Day away from Saturday would allow all citizens, regardless of faith, to participate fully in the democratic process. While recognizing the civic responsibility of its members to vote, the church emphasizes that the Sabbath, observed from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday, holds deep spiritual significance. The church has consistently taught that members should not engage in non-religious activities, including voting, on the Sabbath. In a statement dated July 20, 2024, the church urged its members to ensure their decisions are consistent with Adventist beliefs regarding the sanctity of the Sabbath.
