A memorial service for the late President Prof John Evans Atta Mills at the Asomdwee Park in Accra on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, was marred by a disagreement. The confusion began when former deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, reportedly overran his scheduled time at the venue, delaying the second event meant to mark 12 years since President Mills’ passing. According to a report by Joy FM, the second event was being organised by the NDC.

Two wreath-laying ceremonies were scheduled for Wednesday, July 24, in commemoration of the former President who died on July 24, 2012. The first event, organised by Mr Anyidoho, reportedly ran over its scheduled time, causing a delay for the second event organised by the NDC and the J.E.A. Mills Memorial Heritage. Joy FM reported that the late President’s brother, Samuel Atta-Mills, alleged that Mr Anyidoho sent some individuals said to be family members to the venue. In an interview with Joy News’ Maxwell Agbagba, Mr Samuel Atta-Mills, who is also the MP for Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem constituency in the Central Region, claimed that Mr Anyidoho was being supported by ‘powerful individuals.’ Addressing the incident, the sister of former President Atta Mills, Mercy Araba Ahema Quarshie, described it as ugly and disgusting.
