The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has confirmed that the number of subjects for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will remain unchanged from the previous year. He has urged parents to disregard any conflicting information circulating on social media platforms, specifically a statement attributed to a senior official of the Ghana Education Service (GES) suggesting a reduction in the number of exam subjects to five.
The Director for Schools and Instruction at the GES, Prince Charles Agyemang-Duah, was quoted in an interview with Max24 News claiming that the 2024 BECE would consist of only five subjects. He listed these as “English Language, Mathematics, Science and a Ghanaian Language” along with a fifth general knowledge subject. This fifth subject would cover a range of areas including ICT, Social Studies, and Religious and Moral Education.

Despite concerns raised by stakeholders due to the exams being only six months away, the Minister reassured the public in a press conference in Accra. He stated that the number of BECE subjects would remain as they were last year and that the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) would distribute sample questions for the new examination as it is based on a new curriculum.
