Opuni case update: questionable fertilizer testing methods exposed in court

Dr. Anin Kwapong, the former head of the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG), has raised concerns over the quality of work done by scientists on the Lithovit foliar fertilizer. In his testimony at an Accra High Court, Dr. Kwapong criticized the scientific report and the subsequent certificates issued, indicating that they were fraught with issues. He pointed out that the report had significant flaws, particularly in specifying the fertilizer’s composition, which could mislead and confuse farmers.

The case in question involves Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni, ex-CEO of COCOBOD, and Seidu Agongo, the CEO of Agricult Ghana Limited, who are both facing a litany of charges. The charges include defrauding by false pretences, causing financial loss to the state, money laundering, and corruption by a public officer. Despite the severity of the allegations, both defendants have maintained their innocence, pleading not guilty and have been granted bail.

During the proceedings, Dr. Kwapong expressed his lack of knowledge regarding the introduction and procurement of the Lithovit fertilizer by COCOBOD during his tenure as Acting Executive Director. He also noted that CRIG scientists were not involved in the purchasing process, casting doubt on their involvement and raising questions about the transparency and due diligence of the procurement process.
