Both teams aimed to return to the Premier League after relegation last season. Missing out on automatic promotion, third-placed Leeds faced fourth-placed Southampton in the final showdown.
Southampton, the only team to complete a league double over Leeds this season, triumphed for a third time. Top scorer Adam Armstrong netted the decisive goal mid-way through the first half, marking his 24th of the season. Academy graduate Will Smallbone provided the assist with a perfectly weighted pass.
The match saw chances for both sides. Samuel Edozie missed an opportunity to double Southampton’s lead, while Saints goalkeeper Alex McCarthy made a crucial save during nine minutes of added time to secure the win.
Southampton’s 1-0 victory, driven by Armstrong’s goal, ensured their return to the Premier League.
