TUC threatens strike if government fails to act on illegal mining by end of September

0

Organized labour has issued a stern warning to the government, threatening to strike if decisive action is not taken to combat illegal small-scale mining, also known as galamsey. The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has set an ultimatum, giving the government until the end of September to address their concerns.

In a statement from the TUC Secretary General, the group called for the immediate declaration of a state of emergency in galamsey-affected areas, a halt to mining in forest reserves, the establishment of special courts to prosecute offenders, and military intervention to dismantle mining equipment.

The TUC attributed the widespread environmental destruction to the government’s failure to act decisively against illegal mining.

They stressed that without immediate and concrete measures, the ongoing damage to the environment will continue to escalate, and they will resort to industrial action to press their demands.
