Speaking on Accra-based Asaase Radio, the coordinator for Mentors Chess Academy, David Acheampong, reiterated that chess is important as it helps kids develop critical thinking skills.

“You want to be able to think, look ahead, and predict what is going to happen.”

He said the reason why his academy chose the name African Genius chess was “to communicate that chess also levels the playing field, no matter the background you are coming from.

“If you have brains, you should be able to play. So, that’s why we adopted it. So, we give everybody a chance to come and participate.

He added that a number of schools have already signed up for the championship.

This year’s event will be held 9am at the Legon City Mall in Accra on Saturday, September 21, 2024, and  open to young kids and adults between the ages of seven and 20.

Imagination Africa is an organisation that empowers underprivileged children through structured programs, fostering personal growth and nurturing talent in sports, arts, and academics.
